St Philip Howard selected as part of Government's School Rebuilding Programme

St Philip Howard Catholic Voluntary Academy in Glossop is set to benefit from the Government's School Rebuilding Programme.

The Sunlaws Street school is one of 239 to be allocated a place on a programme that is being supported by a £1.8 billion fund to rebuild and refurbish schools and colleges.

Louisa Morris, head teacher at St Philip Howard, said: “This is exciting news for everyone connected with St Philip Howard and as a school at the heart of the local community, it is also fantastic news for Glossop.

“I am particularly pleased for our pupils, who are at the centre of everything we do and thoroughly deserve this.”

Kevin Gritton, Chief Executive of the St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust, who as well as St Philip Howard have two further schools on the list, said: “This really is amazing news, even more so as only 239 schools have been announced nationally for the project.

“This will be a massive boost for all three schools that have been selected and for their communities. We are delighted for them.”

All buildings in the School Rebuilding Programme are built to the latest construction standards, designed to be net-zero in operation and more resilient to the effects of climate change.

High Peak’s MP Robert Largan said: “The quality of facilities in schools can have a significant impact on a student’s learning and I have been working closely with the Conservative Government to secure investment in our schools to offer children the best opportunity to succeed.

“That is why I welcome the news that St Philip Howard will benefit from the latest round of the School Rebuilding Programme, backed by £1.8 billion in 2022–34 to rebuild and refurbish 239 more schools across the country, including updating and modernising buildings by creating state of the art sports halls, music rooms, science labs, and dining areas.”

In total, 400 out of 500 schools and sixth forms have now been selected for refurbishment or rebuild through the 10-year School Rebuilding Programme.
