Seven former Mayors standing down from High Peak Borough Council

After High Peak goes to the polls on Thursday (4 May), it means there will be a lot of new faces joining the borough council, regardless of the results.

Seven former High Peak Mayors are among the 15 councillors not standing for re-election. This includes almost half of the current councillors representing Glossopdale.

In total, 122 candidates will be contesting the 43 seats.

Those not seeking re-election include a former council leader, three former executive members and seven mayors.

Conservative councillor Tony Ashton (a former council leader), and former executive members Tony Kemp, also a former mayor, Emily Thrane and John Haken are all standing down.

Among the former mayors not seeing re-election are husband and wife Jean and George Wharmby, the Conservative members each held the role of High Peak Mayor, Jean in 2007 and George in 2016. Jean is also a former executive member.

Labour councillors Lance Dowson mayor in 2002, Graham Oakley mayor in 2010, Matt Stone mayor in 2017 and Ed Kelly mayor in 2019 are also standing down.

Other councillors not seeking re-election are Labour’s Rachel Abbots and David Kerr, and Conservative’s Jim Perkins, Eve Burton, and Jamie Douglas.

There were already two vacant seats on the council, after two Whaley Bridge representatives, Kath and Shannon Thomson, resigned from the council and the Labour Party.

The election takes place on Thursday 4 May, with polling stations open from 7am to 10pm. The count will take place the following day in Buxton.
