Rail links strengthened with visit to Glossop

Friends of Glossop Station welcomed four guests from Lowestoft to visit the station and town last week.

The quartet - Martin Halliday Community Rail Development Officer for Community Rail Norfolk, Jacqui Dale and Tim Miller from the Lowestoft Central Project and Tim Wherry from the Wherry Lines Community Rail Partnership - were in Manchester to attend the Community Rail Awards.

Speaking after the visit, Martin said: “We were delighted to visit our friends at Glossop and view the hard work they undertake at the station, making it such a welcoming gateway to the town.

“The communities of Lowestoft and Glossop have a unique bond formed over 80 years ago when Glossop and surrounding area offered safe homes for over 600 schoolchildren away from the wartime threat of East Coast invasion.

“We are proud to work with Friends of Glossop Station to ensure that the connections and memories made all those years ago continue to be cherished and preserved for future generations."

While Martin had visited previously for the others it was their first visit. Despite rain, the visitors were very appreciative of Glossop's Victorian heritage.
