Pupils awarded prizes by mayor at St James Primary school

Pupils from Whitfield St James' CE Primary School have recently taken part in an active travel competition ran by Move More Glossop, both between each year group in the school and against St Mary’s Catholic Primary School.

The pupils encouraged their families to either walk, scoot, skate or cycle to school every day for two weeks. During the fortnight, there was a spell of lousy weather, but this didn’t deter the pupils and their families as an incredible 67% of their journeys were taken actively. To put this into perspective, the national average is 35%. At Mary’s Catholic Primary school also managed an impressive 57% active journeys. St James took the first prize and were awarded £150 vouchers to spend on equipment to encourage pupils to continue their active journeys. St Mary’s were awarded £50.

Each pupil in the winning group were awarded with certificates by mayor Ollie Cross and Move More - High Peak's Helen Thornhill, also attended the special assembly to discuss the benefits of active travel with the pupils.

Major Ollie Cross and Helen would like to thank Mr Woodward (Headteacher), Mr Ford (Deputy Headteacher) and all the pupils & staff for such a warm and friendly welcome. Major Ollie Cross also had the pleasure of meeting the school council; Hannah, Katie, Lennon & William who informed them about the fantastic work they've been carrying out helping school children in Ghana and the school’s core values of friendship, hope, resilience, wisdom, forgiveness & thankfulness. ‘The pupils were impeccably polite, courteous & engaging. As well as a total credit to their school, families and our local community!’ said Major Ollie Cross.
