New Mills Festival's Lantern Parade cancelled for 2023

New Mills will not be holding the popular Lantern Parade again this year.

Usually held in September as part of New Mills Festival, organisers have announced that the procession will not be taking place.

In an update, the festival organisers said there was not yet the people, time, or money in place for the event to be held this autumn.

They said: “New Mills Festival's Lantern Procession has become very very large over the years and is now too big to be safely and enjoyably run by volunteers.”

The news comes after a festival co-ordinator spent three months consulting on what the town wants from its Festival.

Organisers said: “The people of New Mills have spoken, and downscaling the Lantern Procession isn't an option New Mills want. What we now need to do is to make a decisive move to something more long term sustainable.”

They confirmed that they do intend to bring back the event in the future.

“The intention is to Relight the Lanterns, but the future date is yet to be decided. We're sorry it won't take place this year.”

They also thanked all those who came forward following a meeting in the town looking to give their time, resources, and energy for the future of New Mills Festival.

New Mills Festival will be held in September.

Later this month, the entertaining New Mills Duck Race will take place on the River Goyt in New Mills. The event raises funds for Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) from local primary schools and nurseries and the New Mills Festival.

It will take place on Sunday 21 May from midday to 3pm. Visit https://newmillsfestival.co.uk/event/new-mills-duck-race/ for more details.
