Mummy's Star given lottery grant boost

Glossop-based charity Mummy's Star has been given a three-year grant of just under £90,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund.

The funding will help the charity further develop the provision of emotional support for mums diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, or soon after giving birth, and their families.

CEO and founder Pete Wallroth said: “It is the first time we have had a multi-year grant secured for us to increase the emotional support to families that get in touch with us.”

In total, the charity will receive over the next three years £88,955 to enable it to deliver enhanced emotional support.

Pete explained that when the charity contacts families, the first thing the team does is see where they are in their own journey, what the diagnosis is, what the treatment plan is, what existing support network is in place and ensure the help and support they offer is right for their individual needs.

“We don’t want to be duplicating anything, so it is about meeting the family and offering what is best for them,” said Pete.

The funding comes as the charity marks its 10th anniversary with a Mummy's Star Charity Ball, being held at the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester, on Saturday 17 June.

As well as celebrating how far the charity has come, supporting 1,600 families to date, the event will be a chance to remember those they have lost along the way, including Nicolette Peel, who helped found Mummy’s Star, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Pete said: "The 17th of June will be a real celebration of what we have achieved but also a time to reflect what's been done and all the families we have supported and remember those we have lost over the years, none more so than Nicolette."

The evening will be hosted by Jenny Powell and actress and singer Victoria Ekanoye, while there will be entertainment from Diamond Collective and Girls That Mix.
