Local MP visits St Philip Howard to see progress made at Glossop school

High Peak MP Robert Largan paid a visit to St Philip Howard Catholic Voluntary Academy to see the admirable work being led by the school's ambassadors for the wider community of Glossop.

The secondary school has been on a success journey in recent years, which led to their achievement of a 'Good' grade in all areas in their 2021 Ofsted inspection.

On the day of the visit last Friday (11 February), Mr Largan was warmly greeted by the Year 11 Head Girl Sophie Morgan and Head Boy Seb Kinsey, who invited the MP to the school library where students from various year groups - whom collectively form the Senior Students; the Gratitude Club; the Chaplaincy Team and the Student Parliament – eagerly awaited his arrival.

When the Conservative MP arrived to greet them, students seized the opportunity to quiz Mr Largan on prominent problems in the local community, and - most importantly - how the students could use their social and charitable influence to follow in the footsteps of St Philip Howard's alumni, resolving issues around Glossop and further afield.

When asked to describe the school, Mr Largan noted the tangible sense of "community" felt throughout the academy, and declared that SPH seemed to be a "caring environment" to learn in.

Students from all of the groups set up to support the local community then led a presentation to display an array of the charitable work, which the students at St Philip Howard take great pride in. The presentation included recent donations to Glossopdale Foodbank and Jeans for Genes charities, helping people both locally to the High Peak and nationally across the United Kingdom.

Mr Largan was then escorted on a tour of the school by the two head students, where he was shown the schools' facilities and a selection of some of the scientific and artistic work created by students over the years, amongst the projects the school had worked on in lockdown as part of their collaboration with other schools in the Saint Ralph Sherwin Trust on the 'Stronger Together' project.

The MP then answered some brief questions about his duties, and satisfied some students’ curiosities about what a typical day looks like for him.

Following his visit, Mr Largan said on his Facebook page: "It was fantastic to visit and congratulate the school on their really positive progress. I also did a Q&A with pupils and be taken on a tour of the school by the Head Boy and Head Girl. I was really impressed by how well behaved the children were and by their thoughtful questions. A huge well done to everyone at St Philip Howard!"
