High Peak farming hero wins award

Peter Slack receiving his farming award from High Peak MP Robert Largan.

High Peak MP Robert Largan has presented local dairy farmer, Peter Slack, with a Community Farming Hero Award from the National Farmers Union.

The Community Farming Hero Awards recognise farmers who go above and beyond for their community. Recipients could have supported their community during hard times, fundraised for charities or helped people enjoy the farmed landscape.

Mr Largan nominated Mr Slack, a dairy farmer in Taxal. He was nominated for his voluntary help with Young Farmers, particularly Buxton Young Farmers Club.

For over 30 years, Mr Slack has helped the club and its members with public speaking, debating and pantomime performances. He writes the scripts for the stage productions and produces them. The club often wins the County level competition and sometimes the regional level to reach the national finals. Last year they did just that, coming second overall for England and Wales.

By giving up so much of his own time to help Buxton YFC, many YF members have had the opportunity to take part in competitions they never would otherwise have been able to, boosting their confidence and providing them with valuable life skills.

Robert Largan said: “I am so pleased that I have been able to spread awareness about all the hard work Peter does for our area. We are so lucky to have so many fantastic farmers in the High Peak, like Peter.

“This is a great initiative by the NFU and helps highlight the best of British farmers. I always enjoy visiting local farms and I’m proud to stand up for our local farmers in Parliament.”
