High Peak Borough Council and waste collection partner AES join hands with The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal

High Peak Mayor, Councillor Peter Inman, has been appointed the Council's Armed Forces Champion.

The Royal British Legion has launched this year's poppy appeal to ensure the contribution of service men and women is never forgotten, and the Borough Council and its waste collection partner AES are once again supporting their fundraising efforts.

The Council has signed the Armed Forces Covenant, which ensures that:

• Those who serve or have served and their families do not face disadvantage in the provision of services.
• Special treatment is appropriate in some cases, especially for those who have given the most, such as the injured or bereaved.

Welcoming the launch of this year's poppy appeal, High Peak Mayor, Cllr Peter Inman, the Council's Armed Forces Champion, has asked the people of High Peak to continue to show their gratitude to the Armed Forces community.

"I know that people across the Borough have always shown their support by wearing their poppy with pride. I know that they will do so again this year in recognition of the sacrifice that so many have made in conflicts past and present," he said.

"We at the Council are also proud to support the men and women who serve so selflessly through our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant - a promise by the nation to ensure that those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated fairly.

"As a member of the Derbyshire Armed Forces Covenant Partnership, we are committed to working with partners to offer help and practical support to local service personnel past and present," he added.

As in previous years, AES and the Council are displaying poppies on waste collection vehicles as a visual way of showing their support for the appeal.

Executive Councillor for Climate Change and Environment, Jean Todd, said:

"The remembrance events that take place at this time of year mean so much to so many people.

"As our waste crews collect across the High Peak, every community will see vehicles displaying their poppies as a symbol of our ongoing commitment to our Armed Forces."
