Glossop looks set to get a McDonald's restaurant

Fast-food giant McDonald's looks set to be given the green light to open a new restaurant in Glossop.

A planning application for the former Wren Nest pub site is due to go before High Peak Borough Council's Development Control Committee on 6 March and has been recommended for approval by planning officers.

The decision is to be decided by the committee due to the high level of public interest.

The proposals, which have divided the community, are to demolish the existing buildings and replace them with a restaurant with a drive thru as well as parking for 32 vehicles.

McDonald's say the new development would create 65 new jobs - 30 full time and 35 part time roles.

In total, 123 objections were submitted, with fears raised the development could cause even more traffic problems and create further congestion.

However, the report by planning officers states County Highways, following lengthy discussions and a revised site plan, have raised no objections and recommended conditions.

Other concerns raised include impact on existing businesses, the design of the restaurant and the potential environmental impact - in particular litter.

A total of 998 supporting comments have been received by the council, 766 were identical - stating it would bring a derelict site back into use, create local jobs and represent a significant investment in the local area.

High Peak’s Development Control Committee will meet at 1.30pm on Monday 6 March at the Pavilion Gardens in Buxton.
