Glossop kicks off the festive season with Christmas lights switch on

While the on-stage band were singing Rocking around the Christmas Tree' revellers were doing it for real on Norfolk Square on Saturday night.

Glossop Christmas Lights Switch on which brought high hundreds of people into the town centre was reaching its climax.

And as the count -down from 10 arrived at one the combined hands of High Peak's Mayor and Mayoress, Father Christmas and represented pf Reuben's Retreat hit a switch and the lights on the big tree burst into life.

The annual count-down to Chritmad had started around mid-day when people were welcomed to the square and surrounds by the sights and sounds of everything Christmas.

Large and small fairground attractions, stalls and food franchises filled with everything from pizzas and pies to donuts and sweets, and Father Christmas listening to present wishes from lots of young children.

The Christmas spirit continued across High Street West to the outdoors market, with ore festive stalls and food outlets to tempt shoppers.

The fun continued until 8pm and as the day shortened,  darkness fell, the crowds grew and the lights from the fairground lit up the night sky, it really did feel a lot like Christmas.
