Glossop Jog dream firmly in sight

A Glossop charity that’s raised cash for more than 50 good causes is in touching distance of living a dream.

Now it’s appealing to Chronicle readers to help turn that dream into a reality.

Since Glossop Rotary Club first staged the Glossop Jog in 1978 it has pulled in £245,000 for local and national charities.

Rotarians have long looked forward to hitting that quarter of a million pound landmark. Organiser Barrie Powney believes it could happen at Jog 2019... on Sunday, October 6.

With this year’s chosen charity Kidscan, which seeks new treatments for children diagnosed with cancer, he believes it is easily achievable.

Commenting on what will be the 42nd ‘Jog’, Barrie said: “We are very close to reaching the magical goal of £250,000.”

In a rallying call to attract more people to get sponsored to run, jog, or walk the course, he said: “I am contacting schools to put in teams, but everyone is welcome to take part.”

In a break with tradition this year’s jog will be centred at Glossop Cricket Club. Barrie was approached by old friend Alan Garlick, the cricket club’s former chairman, who suggested the North Road venue.

Barrie said the Rotary Club had been unable to get assurances that the Fauvel Road sports ground would be available, so Alan’s offer came at a good time.

“The cricket club seems ideal,” he said. “There will be toilets on site, hot food and Alan says they may consider opening the bar... and it’s a nice course.”

The jog starts at 11am from the front of the pavilion and goes around the field coming out at the gate at Spire Hollin. Then it’s down the path between the ground and St Luke’s School and under the railway bridge to Surrey Street.

The sixth of a mile course turns left up Arundel Street and back into the cricket ground by the Ladybower Court gates. Then it’s back to the start, competing as many laps for sponsorship cash as you can in an hour.

Barrie added: “Whether you are a jogger, a helper or a spectator, a warm welcome awaits you on Sunday, October 6, at Glossop Cricket Club.

“I would like to thank in advance all the people who continue to come to the Jog and raise money for very worthwhile charities.’

Joggers can pre-register for the event at www.glossopjog.co.uk/entries.php, or alternatively just come along and register on the day from 10.30am.

Barrie hopes that Glossopdale people will be just as generous to Kidscan as they were in May when an event at Windy Harbour Farm Hotel raised thousands of pounds for the charity.

It was co-organised by Windy Harbour and 10-year-old Emma Neal of Sunningdale Drive, Glossop, who has a non-aggressive brain tumour which damaged her optic nerve.

She is blind in her right eye and has limited vision in her left eye.

Bright, happy and full of life, she wanted to raise money to help research into children’s cancers.

FLASH BACK: A look at last year’s Glossop Jog, which raised around £5,000 for Macmillan Nurses and other charities. Organiser Barrie Powney is hoping for even more to break through that £250,000 cash barrier overall this year.
