Glossop artists pay tribute to the Queen

The Lamentation by Ghislaine Howard

Critically acclaimed painter, Ghislaine Howard, has honoured HRH Queen Elizabeth II on her social media channels by sharing a special memory.

Ghislaine said: “In preparation for the Royal Maundy Service at Gloucester Cathedral in 2003, the Queen let it be known that she would like one of my drawings relating to The Stations of the Cross/ The Captive Figure, which were at the Cathedral that year, to enter the Royal Collection. I chose this study for The Lamentation.

"When I presented it to her, we had a lovely chat about the drawing, how it had come about and how it related to contemporary events in Iraq. I’ll never forget, she ended the conversation with a smile saying ‘Oh dear, it will have to go in the boot of the car as it’s too big for the helicopter.’”

Meanwhile, Glossop street artist Deggy recently used his special brand of creativity to celebrate the Queen with a portrait - made from sugar and tea leaves - which is now available as a print.

The Queen by Deggy

Deggy says: “Making a canvas from sugar cubes - 1,065 of them - and  using grounded tea leaves to provide highlights in the hair is the method I chose for this portrait. Working out how I would use these materials to create this piece was a massive challenge, but art is about pushing boundaries and jumping out of your comfort zone. What’s more British than painting the Queen out of tea and sugar?

“The portrait was originally made for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and I am working on a new piece to commemorate her life.”
