Following the success of a short story competition for children earlier this year, Derbyshire County Council's library service is launching a creative writing competition for adults.
Derbyshire is the theme of the contest, which runs from Friday 7 October to Friday 4 November.
Libraries are looking for stories of no more than 55 words inspired by our county. This can be interpreted broadly so the story could include a favourite beauty spot, village, building, bridge, monument or somewhere else.
Whatever the style – from thriller to horror, crime to romance – the judges would love to read it.
The winning story will receive a £20 book token. All eligible entries will be published in an ebook on Derbyshire Libraries' BorrowBox platform and will be available for all customers to read and enjoy.
Councillor Barry Lewis, Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Leadership, Culture, Tourism and Climate Change, said: “Our libraries offer brilliant services to their local communities, and this is a wonderful opportunity for people to get more involved.
“It’s also a chance for budding and experienced writers to try their hand at short-form storytelling. I’m intrigued to see what they can come up with in no more than 55 words. I wish them luck.”
How to enter
- Stories must not exceed 55 words in length (excluding title).
- Entries can be in any genre but must feature the county of Derbyshire.
- Stories must be the entrant’s original work.
- Entries must not have been published, published on a website or made public on social media, broadcast or have featured among the winners in a previous competition.
- Please include your name, email address and contact phone number on your entry (this will not count towards the word count).
- Please read all the terms and conditions carefully before submitting your story.
- Stories must be submitted by email either attached as a word document or in the main body of the email. PDFs will not be accepted.
- Send entries to ask.library@derbyshire.gov.uk. Entrants must live in Derbyshire, excluding the city of Derby.
