Local campaigners were out in Norfolk Square on Saturday as part of a nationwide initiative to remember people who have died because of cold homes.
The official figures for excess winter deaths were released last week. The total figure is over 13,000 and Fuel Poverty Action claim that almost 3,000 of these were due to people living in cold, damp homes.
Members of High Peak Green New Deal, Warm Homes Whitfield and Unite Community gave out leaflets and said there was a good response to their petition calling on the government to remove all prepayment meters from homes where they are not wanted.
Linda Walker, a spokesperson for the groups, said: "Hundreds of thousands of people have been forced onto these meters, and any time they cannot afford to keep them topped up their gas and electricity is automatically disconnected. This is cruel and unjust.
"People with the least resources have to pay more for their energy, and can be disconnected even if they are elderly and frail or they have small children in the house."
