Campaign calls for safe routes for asylum seekers

MESSAGE: Campaigners in Glossop.

Anti-racist and green campaigners joined forces in the centre of Glossop to call for safe routes for people seeking asylum.

The vigil was held at the start of Refugee Week, which this year has the theme 'Compassion'.

Cath Hughes, of High Peak Stand Up to Racism, said: “We are calling on ministers and our MP to show some empathy for people who have had to flee war, oppression, or climate change in search of a safer life.”

Green New Deal campaigners joined the vigil.

Linda Walker, speaking for Green New Deal, said: “Climate change is going to cause the displacement of enormous numbers of people in the future.”

June 20 was World Refugee Day and the High Peak Stand Up to Racism group was asking people to share posts on social media to raise the plight of refugees, and call for compassionate action from the Government.
