Buxton markets cancelled after vital equipment is vandalised

Buxton Market CIC has suffered a blow after vital equipment was vandalised forcing two markets to be cancelled.

The community owned and run business took the decision to cancel its next two markets after six tyres on its trailers and two on its float were discovered with punctures. The equipment is parked at different locations near Buxton town centre.

Buxton Market CIC co-chair Tim Ball said: “Without the float and trailers we cannot move the market stalls, and so we have decided to cancel the markets on Saturday 7 and Tuesday 10 January.

“Two of our regular traders have confirmed that they will still be coming: Vinny’s veg stall and Jamie’s fish van, and we are working with them to advertise their presence on the market place – but essentially our first two markets of 2023 are cancelled.”

He revealed that they initially thought the damage was down to high jinx on New Year’s Eve but on closer inspection now believe the vehicles were deliberately targeted.

“The matter has been reported to the Police – and we would urge anyone who may know anything about this vandalism to contact the Police immediately by calling 101.

“We are a small community run company, which relies heavily on a small but dedicated team of volunteers and paid workers. We are at a loss to know why anyone would want to sabotage our vehicles in this way.

“This is our seventh year running the market and we have never been attacked like this before. It is very upsetting for everyone involved.”
