Big Summer Bash at Old Glossop Cricket Club raises funds for good causes

Old Glossop Cricket Club held a Big Summer Bash last Sunday (4 September) to round off the summer holidays with a day of fun for all the family.

Run in association with Paul Hardy, Councillor for Old Glossop and former Mayor of the High Peak, the event is now in its second year.

The day was held to raise funds for Bradbury House Community Centre in Glossop and, further to their recent crowdfunding campaign, for new practice facilities at Old Glossop Cricket Club.

The weather was thankfully kind, despite a gloomy forecast, and the rain stayed away so everyone enjoyed a warm, sunny, and relaxed afternoon at the club on Manor Park Road.

Many local organisations were in attendance; the Glossop fire brigade brought a fire engine, Glossop Mountain Rescue Team had their rescue vehicle, Glossop Heritage Trust displayed their latest range of merchandise, and Glossop Cat Rescue had a stall.

Alongside this was a wide selection of craft and food and drinks outlets. There was plenty to keep the kids occupied with a large bouncy castle, a face painter and an ice cream van.

There was live music from Glossop Old Band and local bands Taxi for John and Suede Apple, who kept the crowds entertained throughout the day.

A round-robin sponsors six-a-side cricket tournament ran alongside all day. The matches were good natured but hard fought, with the team from Arundel Tree Surgeons being crowned the overall winners of the competition.

The fun day came at the end of a busy weekend for Old Glossop CC, having run also a very popular outdoor cinema night on Friday (2 September) showing The Greatest Showman, which was a great success and will be repeated next season.

Den Lane, from Old Glossop Cricket Club, said: “We have worked hard to make this a club for our community, it’s not just a cricket club, but somewhere that everyone is welcome. We have a very friendly atmosphere, we’re a real family club. Getting kids into cricket and sport in general is important, so welcoming new families to OGCC through our events is important. We’ve seen so many new faces this weekend, many who didn’t know we were here, and haven’t visited before, so it’s been great.

“We’re very thankful to everyone for donating towards our new net facilities, which will really benefit everyone at the club going forward. As a cricket club, we are running more training and teams than ever before, so the new practice facilities are really needed. We are so grateful that we have a wonderfully supportive community around us, and it’s great to give them a place they feel welcome.”

Cllr Hardy thanked everyone who supported this event, which raised over £1,000 for Bradbury Community House in Glossop. He thanked all the stallholders and the team at Old Glossop Cricket Club for their support to run the event.

Paul said: “Bradbury House has been an integral part of our Glossop community for many years. It’s an ideal meeting venue for business and social groups and offers a range of facilities and rooms of all sizes. It relies on donations to keep afloat and currently needs £60k to replace all the windows. If you think you can help, or if any local businesses would like to donate, please contact me at p-hardy2@sky.com or on 07916312593."
