Amy calls on people to support special walk

Glossop resident is calling on people to gather their friends and family to support the Alzheimer’s Society by signing up to the Manchester Memory Walk, which is taking place on Sunday in Heaton Park.

Amy Beale, 25, along with her mum, dad and friend, will join thousands of participants stepping out at Heaton Park to stop dementia from devastating lives and is encouraging others to lend their support by joining them in raising vitals funds for the charity.

Amy signed up to the sponsored walk after her nan, Barbara Anne Dyson, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s last September, aged 82.

Amy said: “We started noticing signs and symptoms of nan’s dementia in Covid.

“It wasn’t easy to deal with at first as we had to pull together to care for her.

“Doing her shopping, cleaning the house and making sure she was dressed and cleaned too, but since she has moved
into a residential home it has eased things for the family.

“She is really happy there and ruling the roost. It’s a relief to know she is being well looked after. We try and see her every weekend if can.

“It can feel sad at times as she still recognises us, but she does forget what my brother and I are called. She also lost one of her daughters (my aunt) earlier this year and she doesn’t remember this.

“I am feeling good about doing the Manchester memory walk. It’s good to know we will be raising awareness of dementia.” Amy’s commitment to supporting Alzheimer’s Society with fundraising has never been more important, with one in three people born today in the UK going on to develop dementia in their lifetime. Money raised from the event will help fund faster diagnosis, ongoing support through some of the hardest and most
frightening times and vital research, providing help and hope to everyone living with dementia.

Sue Clarke, regional manager for Alzheimer’s Society in Greater Manchester, said: “With around 30,000 people living with dementia in Greater Manchester, there has never been a better time to gather your support network and take part in the Manchester Memory Walk.

“The buzz of the crowd, quiet moments of remembrance, the hug of a stranger who gets it - whatever you feel on the day, you won’t be alone.

“Every pound raised by incredible supporters, such as Amy, will help improve the lives of everyone living with dementia both now and in the future.
“So whether you walk as one or walk with many on Sunday, October 8, it’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate and remember all those affected by dementia and help fund vital support and research.”

Hundreds of supporters have already registered to take part in the Manchester Memory Walk, which will start at 11am. The sponsored walk is suitable for all ages and abilities and is free to sign up.

Participants can also opt to organise a walk of their own at a time and location of their choice during autumn 2023 and will receive a fundraising pack and T-shirt. To sign up and find out more, visit memorywalk.org.uk
