91st anniversary of Kinder Trespass to be marked

The 91st anniversary of the Kinder Trespass is to be marked with events looking at ways to defend and extend the freedom to roam.

On Saturday 22 April from 1pm, Hayfield Kinder Trespass Group with Spirit of Kinder will be holding a day of music, stalls, exhibitions and talks around Hayfield.

The overarching theme will be encouraging diversity – in terms of accessing open spaces and rights of access – and in the strategies campaigners adopt to defend and extend access.

Campaigners say it is an important event for anyone who cares about the hard-won rights to enjoy open spaces in town and country.

Contributors will include national representatives from the Ramblers’ Association, the National Trust, the Open Spaces Society, the BMC, Outdoor Swimming Society, Right 2 Roam, Mosaic, Black Men Walking, Queer Out Here and others still to be confirmed.

Panels will include Craig Best, Kate Ashbrook, Dr Morag Rose, Yvonne Witter, Ailish Breen, Maxwell Ayamba, Roly Smith, Owen Hayman, James MacColl, Julian Batsleer and Keith Warrender.

There will be stalls, exhibitions and live music throughout the day and into the evening. Music will include sets by well-known folk singers Brian and Margaret Peters, award winning Maddie Morris, and in the evening, local rock cover band Recover.

On Sunday 23 April, many groups and individuals will walk up to Kinder Scout for the day.
