Youths stop searched by police at two Droylsden churches

Fairfield Moravian Church.

Youths have been stop searched for drugs after a spike in anti-social behaviour around two historic churches in Droylsden.

Police say youngsters have been gathering at St Mary's Church, on Church Street, and Fairfield Moravian Church, on Fairfield Square, in recent weeks.

GMP Tameside South and West say the groups of youths have been "causing issues for local residents" and causing criminal damage, drinking alcohol and taking drugs.

Local neighbourhood officers have since performed stop searches in the area and seized cannabis from the youths, who have then been taken home to parents to inform them.

With the Easter holidays continuing this week, police are warning youngsters to avoid the area and promise to act again if needed.

A GMP Tameside South and West spokesperson said: "Extra officers will be out patrolling these locations. If anyone is found at these locations, they will be spoken to by officers and, if required, stop searches will be conducted, possibly leading to arrests."
