Woman dies after being hit by tram in Droylsden

A woman has died after being hit by a tram in Droylsden.

Greater Manchester Police were called just before 8pm on Friday night (18 December) to reports of a collision between a tram and a pedestrian on Ashton Road, by the Market Street tram stop.

Emergency services attended and a woman - believed to be in her 30s - was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tram stopped at the New Islington Metrolink stop whilst the driver assisted police with their enquiries, a GMP spokesperson said.

They added that no arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

Market Street was closed for a period on Friday night and there was a heavy emergency services presence at the junction with Manchester Road, close to the post office, including the fire service.

Tram services between Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Piccadilly were also suspended.

PC Philip Collingwood, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This is an incredibly upsetting incident for the woman's family and loved ones, and our thoughts remain with them this at this difficult time.

"This incident happened in a busy location where there were a number of witnesses present who might be able assist police in their investigation to establish the full circumstances of this incident.

"If you have any footage or any information and have not yet spoken to police, please get in touch as soon as possible. Even the smallest piece of information could prove vital in helping us to complete our enquiries."

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 4741, quoting log number 3028 of 17/12/21.

Alternatively, reports can be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
