Who's appeared in court in Tameside recently?

Tameside Magistrates' Court in Ashton.

A man who spat at a police officer and a teenager found with drugs are among the cases heard at Tameside Magistrates' Court of late.

Here's the round-up... 

Jail threat for spitting at police officer

Ashton man Sam Phillips has been given a suspended jail sentence for assaulting a police officer.

The 27-year-old, of Dean Street, initially denied the charge but changed his plea to guilty.

The court heard the assault happened on October 9 last year when he had spat at the officer during the coronavirus pandemic.

He also admitted charges of being in possession of a quantity of cannabis and of being threatening and abusive on the same date.

Magistrates gave him an eight weeks jail sentence, suspended for 18 months.

They fined him £220, ordered him to pay £100 compensation plus instructed him to pay £85 court costs and a £128 victim surcharge.

He was also given a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement meaning he must attend specific appointments with an officer.

Magistrates instructed the cannabis be confiscated and destroyed.

Prison term for break-ins

Stalybridge man Dean Walker has been jailed for 24 weeks by Tameside magistrates.

The 34-year-old, of Cambridge Street, admitted a charge of entering the Legendz pub in the town with intent to steal on October 5 this year plus being threatening and abusive to a police officer on the same date.

He also pleaded guilty to breaking into the Buffet Bar in Stalybridge and stealing £100 of alcohol on the same date.

Magistrates ordered him to pay a total of £450 compensation.

Over the legal drink drive limit

Denton driver Kevin Spence has been banned from the road for a year for being over the drink drive limit.

The 44-year-old, of Turner Street, admitted the offence after being stopped on Ashton Road in Denton on September 10 this year and found to have 43 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

He was fined £323 plus ordered to pay £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £34.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by three months if a driving course is successfully completed.

Teen found with drugs

A teenager found in possession of a quantity of cannabis and cocaine has been given a 12 months conditional discharge by Tameside magistrates.

Bilal Ahmed, 19, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to the offences after being found with the drugs on September 6 this year.

He was ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £22.

Magistrates instructed the cannabis and cocaine be confiscated and destroyed.

Drunk and disorderly

Being drunk and disorderly in Stalybridge has cost Darren Biggs an £107 court bill.

The 32-year-old, of Fox Street, Oldham, admitted the offence plus a further charge of being threatening and abusive on September 11 this year.

Tameside magistrates gave him a 12 months conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £22 victim surcharge.

More than twice over legal limit

Ashton driver Bilal Talib was more than two times over the drink drive limit when stopped on Oldham Road in the town.

Tameside magistrates banned him from the road for 40 months and ordered him to carry out 200 hours unpaid work for the offence.

The 31-year-old, of Uxbridge Street, pleaded guilty to the charge after being stopped on October 7 and found to have 73 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

He must also pay £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

He was also issued with a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, meaning he must attend appointments with an officer at their direction.

Motorist over drug drive limit

A Manchester motorist has been banned from the road for 12 months for driving through Droylsden while over the drug drive limit.

Kathleen Ward, 34, of Himley Road, admitted the charge relating to an incident on January 24 this year.

She also admitted driving without due care and attention on Edge Lane in Droylsden.

Tameside Magistrates fined her £120 plus ordered her to pay £85 court costs and pay a £34 victim surcharge.

Two weeks in jail 

Tameside magistrates jailed Craig Kelly for 14 days for failing to comply with previous court orders. 

The 37-year-old, of Russell Street, Ashton, admitted being in breach of the orders.

Behind bars

Bruce Mycock, 20, of Fairfield Road, Buxton, has been jailed for seven days by Tameside magistrates.

He admitted being in breach of previous court orders.

Out of order 

Adele Neary, 31, of Fairfield Road, Droylsden, was ordered to pay court costs of £60 by Tameside magistrates for failing to comply with previous court orders. She admitted being in breach of the order.

Parents fined

Tameside magistrates have fined more parents for failing to ensure their children regularly attend school.

Fines of £440 were handed out in some instances, with additional court costs of more than £370 also having to be paid.
