A murder charge, multiple driving bans and stolen items in various areas of the borough are among the recent cases heard by the Tameside Magistrates' Court.

Motorist found to be over limit

Tameside magistrates have banned Raymond Buckley from the road for 18 months.

The 56-year-old, of Windsor Drive, Dukinfield, admitted an offence of being over the drink drive limit on April 12 this year.

The court heard he was stopped on Dewsnap Lane, Dukinfield, and found to have 68 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Magistrates fined him £450, plus ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £45 victim surcharge.

The disqualification can be reduced by 11 months if a driving course is successfully completed.

Three year ban from driving

Gareth Rhodes has been banned from the road for three years by Tameside magistrates.

The 51-year-old, of Turner Gardens, Newton, Hyde, pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to provide a specimen when suspected of having committed a driving offence, although he had initially denied the charge.

Magistrates fined him £120 plus ordered him to pay a £95 victim surcharge.

The court heard the offence had happened on March 1 last year on Mottram Road in Hyde.

Order, fine for stealing items

Stealing an ear pod, mobile battery pack and clothing worth £100 from an individual landed Lee Mullins before Tameside magistrates.

The 40-year-old pleaded guilty to taking the items on January 12 this year in Stockport.

Tameside magistrates fined him £40 and issued him with a community order.

He must pay £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

His address was given as Wild Street, Bredbury.

Lengthy driving disqualification

Tameside magistrates have banned Hyde driver Clifford Jones from the road for three years.

The 39-year-old, of Bennett Street, was stopped on Cavendish Street in Ashton on October 11 last year and found to have 47 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

He pleaded guilty and was fined £173 and must pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by 36 weeks.

Jail threat for carrying knife on Metro

Tram passenger Callum Cooney was found in possession of a knife on the Metro in Droylsden, Tameside magistrates were told.

The 31-year-old, of Adam Street, Ashton, pleaded guilty to the offence of carrying a knife in public.

The court heard that until the point the knife came out of his pocket he had a reasonable reason for carrying it - being a chef.

However, magistrates said the seriousness of the charge meant only a custodial charge - albeit suspended - could be given. They gave him a four months custodial sentence, suspended for one year.

He must pay £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £128.

Magistrates ordered that the Richard Sabatar Sheffield steel knife concerned be confiscated and destroyed.

Man, 63, faces murder charge

A Tameside man has been charged with the murder of a woman in Shaw, Oldham.

Stephen Booth, 63, of Churchfields, Audenshaw, has been charged with the murder of 62-year-old Susan Booth.

She was discovered at around 8.50pm with serious injuries outside a property in Hillside, Shaw, on Tuesday last week.

She was taken to hospital, but despite the best work of medical staff, the former nurse was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

Stephen Booth was remanded in custody and appeared at Manchester Crown Court on Thursday last week to face the charge.

A trial date was set for October and no plea was entered.

Motorist was over the drink drive limit

High Peak motorist Corin Crossland was found to be over the drink drive limit when stopped last month, Tameside magistrates were told.

The 24-year-old, of Aldersgate, New Mills, pleaded guilty to the charge after being found to have 67 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the legal limit of 35.

He was banned from the road for 18 months plus fined £300 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by 18 weeks if a driving course is successfully completed.

Stay at home order after assault on police constable

A woman who assaulted a police constable in the course of their duty has been given a curfew order by Tameside magistrates.

Chloe Gunn, 21, of Hart Mill Close, Mossley, pleaded guilty to the offence which had happened on March 21 last year in the town.

Magistrates handed her an eight weeks curfew, meaning she must remain at her address between the hours of 9pm and 7am each night for the duration of the curfew.

She was also instructed to pay compensation of £50, plus pay £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £90.

Over the drug drive limit

Motorist Christopher Murray was over the drug drive limit when stopped on Oxford Road, Dukinfield, Tameside magistrates heard.

The 36-year-old, of Nursery Road, Failsworth, admitted the offence and was banned from the road for a year.

He was fined £120 plus must pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

Unpaid work for assault

Simon Smith must carry out 100 hours unpaid work for an offence of assault.

The 32-year-old, of Almond Court, Dukinfield, pleaded guilty to assaulting an individual in Stalybridge on March 27 this year.

At Tameside magistrates he was also issued with a community order and must pay £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

Pay back for damages and fined for having cannabis

Jonathan Humphreys has been ordered to pay out more than £500 by Tameside magistrates after being found in possession of drugs and causing damage to police property.

Magistrates heard he was found in possession of a quantity of cannabis on April 19 in Ashton.

He pleaded guilty to the offence plus damaging items at Ashton Custody Office.

Magistrates fined him £80, plus ordered him to pay compensation of £273.

The 32-year-old, of Booth Close, Stalybridge, was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

Under orders

Gareth Glass was issued with a restraining order by Tameside magistrates after breaking a previous court order.

The 38-year-old, of Tennyson Avenue, Denton, pleaded guilty to breaching the previous order on April 1 last year.

He was fined £100, plus must pay £85 court costs and a £90 victim surcharge.

Motorway driver twice over legal limit

A motorist stopped at Junction 24 at Denton on the M60 was more than twice over the drink drive limit, Tameside magistrates heard.

Ryan Scutt, 32, admitted the offence after being found to have 81 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Tameside magistrates disqualified him from driving for 18 months, plus fined him £120. He must pay £85 court costs and £34 victim surcharge.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by 18 weeks if a driving course is successfully completed.

His address was given as Grange Avenue in Flixton.

Dog dangerously out of control

Mossley man John Smalley has been ordered to pay £500 compensation for being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control, namely a Staffordshire terrier, while at Crewe railway station.

The court heard the incident had happened back in November 2016.

The 52-year-old, of Hart Mill Close, pleaded guilty to the charge and was given a 12 months conditional discharge.

There was no order for costs with the court stating compensation took priority.

Paying out for triple assault

Middleton man Tony McGoff assaulted three people in Stalybridge, Tameside magistrates heard.

The 26-year-old, of Kingswood Road,  admitted the triple charge plus damaging property at the town’s Tesco store.

The offences all related to an incident on March 31 this year.

Magistrates ordered him to pay a total of £375 compensation.

He was also ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £34.

Drove without enough care

Mohammad Waris admitted driving a car without due care and attention and without insurance cover.

At Tameside Magistrates’ Court, the 56-year-old, of Newstead Avenue, Ashton, was fined a total of £381 for the offences, which had happened on Huddersfield Road, Oldham, on June 24 last year.

He admitted the offences and was banned from the road for six months, plus must pay £85 court costs and a £38 victim surcharge.

Stole alcohol from town shop

Tameside magistrates have fined Nyle Gallagher £80 for stealing two bottles of Jack Daniels whisky.

The 29-year-old, of Victoria Road, Dukinfield, admitted taking the alcohol from Jits Supershop in Stalybridge on November 16 last year.

Magistrates ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
