Two Tameside town centres bid for £35m funding

FUNDING BID: Improvements are needed at Denton Town Hall.

Plans for major regeneration in Denton and Stalybridge town centres are in place, subject to two funding bids that are being prepared for submission to the government by 6 July.

The two bids to the national Levelling Up Fund will support Tameside Council’s plans to make its town centres improved places for shopping, employment, culture and living.

The areas bid for funding in Denton are:

  • Improving the public realm, including upgraded pedestrian and bike routes and cycle parking across the town centre.
  • Improving Denton Festival Hall to support creation of a neighbourhood hub.
  • Funding towards improvements to Denton Town Hall.

The areas bid for funding in Stalybridge are:

  • Unlocking brownfield development sites for private sector investment at Stalybridge West.
  • Carrying out public realm improvements to pedestrian and cycle routes and access to public transport.
  • Delivery of the Stalybridge ‘Cultural Quarter’ following further works to the Civic Hall and Ashley Cheetham Library and Art Gallery.

Councillor David Sweeton, Tameside Council Executive Member for Business & Employment, said: “These plans highlight our continued ambition for Denton and Stalybridge town centres and supports the aims of our Inclusive Growth Strategy.

"We are committed to delivering continuous improvements to our towns to help our communities flourish and ensure Tameside remains somewhere people want to live, work and spend their leisure time.”
