Teenage boy in critical condition after being hit by a tram

The incident happened close to Ashton Moss Metrolink stop.

A teenage boy is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a tram in Ashton. 

Emergency services rushed to Lord Sheldon Way at around 5pm on Thursday (9 December) to the incident near Ashton Moss tram stop. 

A police cordon was in place for several hours while tram services were immediately suspended between Ashton-under-Lyne and Droylsden, and are still not running on Friday morning. 

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said the force was called at around 5.05pm to a report of a collision involving a tram and a pedestrian, 

They say a male in his teens was taken to hospital with serious injuries and he remains in a critical condition on Friday (10 December). 

Enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made, GMP added.

The force is urging any witnesses to come forward with any information they may have. 

Constable Karl Horner, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are appealing to members of the public who may have been in the area at the time of the collision and may have CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident.

"This was an awful incident and we are continuing our enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding how this happened.

"Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 4741 or via our LiveChat at www.gmp.police.uk quoting incident 2169 of 09/12/21.

"Alternatively, details can be passed via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111." 

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service also sent three fire engines from Ashton, Philips Park and Gorton fire station, as well as the technical rescue unit, who assisted with the emergency service response for around an hour and 15 minutes. 

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said they sent an ambulance, advanced paramedic, consultant paramedic, an emergency doctor and an operational commander to the scene. They said the patient was treated at the scene and then taken to hospital in a serious condition.
