Teen arrested after trying to break into police vehicle

A teenager who stopped police from responding to an emergency by shouting and swearing at officers as he tried to break into their vehicle has been arrested.

Greater Manchester Police's Tameside North and East team were responding to an alarm going off at a pawnbroker in Ashton town centre on Monday afternoon (15 March) when the 18-year-old male was witnessed on CCTV trying to gain access to their parked police vehicle "numerous times".

The male "put up a struggle" and had to be restrained, GMP say.

They add: "Whilst being restrained he continued to shout and swear at officers in front of his associates and claiming innocence, with no regard to other members of the public passing.

"This behaviour took officers away from the emergency call they were responding to and reduced the effectiveness of the police response."

He was arrested for vehicle interference and public order, and awaited interview in custody at Ashton police station on Monday evening.
