Tameside Rotary dig deep to support The Queen's Green Canopy

ROYAL PLANTING DUTIES: Digging in to plant trees at Gorse Hall.

Tameside Rotary has played its part in helping to create 'The Queen's Green Canopy' by planting trees at Gorse Hall in Stalybridge.

The Queen's Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee this year and inviting people across the country to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

Tameside Rotary President Angela Robbins said: “We wanted to do something for The Queen’s Green Canopy and our community chair John Moon brought it all together.  We feel like we have achieved a lot. All for the; #queensgreencanopy and our future generation to have a better future and cleaner air.”

The Rotary team braved cold and wet spring weather earlier this month to plant trees, surrounding them with hessian to protect them.

Angela added: “The wild cherry trees planted will ultimately form a pathway and in 10 years will look beautiful and form a shady pretty walk in the summer.”

Tameside Rotary would like to thank Alan Pickles from Friends of Gorse Hall for his help in organising and choosing the correct trees and area for planting.

Tameside Rotary, formed in November 2015,  has made a significant difference in the area making annual donations of approximately £20,000 to local charitable causes.

They are a friendly and informal group, meeting on the second Tuesday each month and, when possible, in different locations across Tameside.

With more than 30 members, from all areas in the borough; membership is open to everyone.

As Rotary is International, there is a real opportunity for members to serve the wider world community; like supporting an Eye Hospital in Bangladesh for example, working in partnership with Global Sight Solutions and the Rotary Club of Sylhet Pride.

Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland - part of Rotary International - has 1,800 clubs and more than 51,000 members. Rotary clubs are open to persons of all ages who are business, professional or community leaders and who want to use their experience for the benefit of others.

Rotary International (founded in 1905 in Chicago) is the world’s largest international service organisation with 1.2 million professional people as members. There are 33,000 clubs in 200 countries and geographical areas.

Rotary runs countless humanitarian projects covering peace and  conflict resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic and community development.

Local organisations Tameside Rotary has supported include:  The Anthony Seddon Trust, Droylsden Food Bank, Home Start, The Dogs Trust (Denton), PPE – local care homes, Greystones Refuge , Tameside Young Carers, Infinity Initiatives, Willow Wood Hospice, The Shed (Ashton).
