Tameside residents urged to get cycling

Tameside residents are urged to get cycling for national Bike Week to boost their health and wellbeing.

Tameside Council is backing the We Are Cycling UK’s campaign for Bike Week, themed on health and wellbeing.

The council is encouraging local people to get involved in the virtual social media challenge, an inspiring series of digital events, as well as enjoying a bike ride.

From Sunday 30 May to Saturday 5 June, people can sign up to the digital sessions, including training tips and advice, or download a route to experience a different ride. People can log rides on the Bike Week website for a chance to win some great prizes at: https://www.cyclinguk.org/bikeweek/7daysofcycling

Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Population Health, Councillor Eleanor Wills, said: “Due to the pandemic and restrictions on movements, Tameside has seen many more people out on their bikes, from families making use of more time together, to key workers avoiding public transport.

“Cycling can fix many of society’s biggest problems, including air pollution, obesity, poor mental health and ill health from inactivity.  People should continue to benefit from cycling more once the pandemic is over.”

There are lots of great places for cycling in Tameside. For details, visit https://www.tameside.gov.uk/StreetsandTransport/Cycling

You can inspire others to take part in Bike Week and share your positive stories online about how amazing riding a bike can be using the hashtag #7daysofcycling and #TamesideLovesCycling.
