Step back in time along historic Daisy Nook canal

HISTORY WALK: Daisy Nook.

This year's Heritage Open Days are just around the corner and Tameside will be playing an active part in the national event once again.

Although generally associated with historic buildings opening their doors, a canal walk back in time is also being organised.

The Daisy Nook Canal History Walk will set off on Friday, September 9 and Saturday, September 17, at 1pm on both days.

The guided walk will offer participants the opportunity to see and hear about the historic features of this section of the Droylsden to Hollinwood canal and to discover some of the history of the canal and the area.

The canal route was just over 4.5 miles (7.2 km) long and went through Droylsden and Waterhouses to terminate at Hollinwood Basin. Its main purpose was to carry coal from numerous local collieries to the many mills and factories in the neighbourhood of the Ashton Canal. Passengers were also carried along its length.

The walk will take about 90 minutes.

Make a date for your diary and meet at the café at Daisy Nook Country Park, M35 9WJ, on one of the two dates.

Meanwhile, the Fairfield Moravian Church, Settlement and Museum will once again be opening its doors for this year’s Heritage Open Days.

The Moravian Settlement was built in 1785 as a self-sufficient religious community.

Although the surrounding area has changed substantially, the Settlement and its buildings retain much of their original character and it is a unique historical gem.

Heritage Open Days is an annual event in England taking place over ten days in September to celebrate the country’s history, culture and architecture.

This year the event will take place between Friday-Sunday, September 9-18, 2022. This year’s theme will be a celebration of inventions, innovations and discoveries.

Tameside traditionally plays an active part, opening its historic buildings to the public over one weekend in September.

At the Fairfield Moravian Settlement there will be guided tours on Sunday, September 11, from 1-4pm.
