Stalybridge hero becomes the 'Secret Millionaire'

LIVING THE DREAM: Steve Barton is helping others after his 'TV fame' prompted major cash donations.

Stalybridge hero Steve Barton BEM is living his dream of helping those less fortunate of needing something to make a difference to their lives.

Barty's Food Bank, based on Stalybridge Labour Club's car park (in a storage container) and in two local schools, was the recent subject of BBC news reports.

The prime time TV reports highlighted Steve's efforts, over several years, to provide food for low income families, with the support of many local businesses.

His appearance on national TV prompted a flood of donations from across the world, of both food and cash, to support his work.

In total, more than £16,000 was donated, securing the short-term future of the food bank, plus an opportunity for Steve to put into action a long-held dream.

Steve was a fan of the Secret Millionaire TV show, where those on high incomes helped those not so fortunate. If ever he had access to a pot of money, he vowed he would use it to help others.

From the donations he received, he began identifying local individuals and groups, then turned up unexpectedly with appropriate gifts of cheques, for them to spend as they wished.

Over the last few months, he has made 42 visits to people with life-limiting illness, disabilities or groups for special projects, giving away over £8,000.

For each of the last four years, Steve has appealed to the local community for Easter eggs, to give to children from disadvantaged families, many whose parents use his food bank.

Last year, he was able to pass on 14,000 chocolate eggs, a total he hopes will top 20,000 this year.

Unfortunately, both Covid and the cost of living squeeze have dented donations so far. But with the community's help, he hopes to achieve his target and hopefully exceed it.

Donations of eggs can be made at Tesco in Stalybridge or Taylor Wood Estate Agents on Market Street in Hyde. You can also drop them off at Barty's Food Bank on Wednesdays and Fridays between 9.15am and 11.15am.

Steve is still also receiving cash donations to enable more surprise visits, helping people across Tameside.

He told the Reporter: "There is no better feeling than seeing someone smile and show their gratitude, when I'm able to help them.

"If I was a famous footballer or won the lottery, I would give a lot of what I had to those who needed it. But I'm just a hard-working gardener, just about getting by.

"So to have the chance to do what I'm doing is amazing and I love it."

The world needs more Steve Bartons and more donations will help. You can contact him by emailing stevebarton70@hotmail.co.uk
