Serving up double celebrations in Stalybridge

Stalybridge served up a double celebration on Friday.

The first Stalybridge Street Fest of the year was held alongside the official launch of the town being named ‘Greater Manchester Town of Culture.’

There was a feast of food and a host of special events including dancing, performances and music.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham was also there to lend his support and see for himself the success of the food event as well as being an official guest at the cultural launch.

Events were staged as usual around Armentieres Square but also in the Civic Hall, with numerous businesses also opening.

Cllr Leanne Feeley, Tameside Council’s executive member with responsibility for culture, said an ongoing programme of events would be factored into the rest of the year as the town looks to celebrate its cultural status.

Other highlights of the calendar ahead include the return of the Whit Friday Brass Band contests, celebrations to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the town’s carnival.
