Round-up: Who has appeared in court in Tameside?

A man with a baton and knife in a public place, a driver guilty of drug and drink driving, and a man facing two harassment charges are some of the cases heard lately by magistrates in Tameside.

Here's the latest round-up...

Twice over the limit 

Gorton motorist Martin Rowley drove when more than two times over the legal drink drive limit, Tameside magistrates heard.

The 47-year-old, of Winning Hill Close, admitted the offence which had happened in Edgeley on February 14 this year. 

He was found to have 78 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit being 35.

He was fined £400 and banned from the road for 12 months, plus must pay £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £40.

The disqualification can be reduced by three months if a course is satisfactorily completed.

Disqualification for Ashton driver

Tameside magistrates have fined Wayne Barrowclough £120 for driving while already disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence.

The 31-year-old, of Oldham Road, Ashton, was stopped on Hadfield Crescent in Ashton on January 26 this year. He admitted the offence, plus having no insurance cover.

Magistrates banned him from the road for a further three months, plus ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

Found with drugs

Tameside magistrates have fined Saiyeem Ali £120 for being in possession of a quantity of cocaine.

The 20-year-old, of Burkitt Street, Hyde, pleaded guilty to the offence which had happened in May last year.

The court ordered him to pay costs of £85 plus a victim surcharge of £32.

Magistrates ordered the cocaine be forfeited and destroyed.

Drunk and disorderly 

Philip Thompson has been given a 12 months conditional discharge by Tameside magistrates for a charge of being drunk and disorderly.

The 57-year-old, of Compstall Road, Marple Bridge, admitted the offence which had happened in Daw Bank bus station, Stockport, on March 3 this year.

He was ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £22 victim surcharge.

One-year ban 

Manchester man Omar Abdalla has been banned from driving for 12 months for being over the drug drive limit.

The 25-year-old, of Plymouth Grove, was stopped on September 10 last year on Manchester Road in Ashton. 

He admitted the offence and was fined £120 by Tameside magistrates, plus ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

Over drug and alcohol limit

A 33-year-old from Droylsden has been banned from the road for drink and drug driving.

Ashley Atkinson, of Fold Avenue, was stopped on Greenside Lane in the town on July 4 last year and found to be over the limit.

Tameside magistrates were told he had 115 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, exceeding the legal limit, plus was over the drug drive limit too.

He admitted the offences, plus a further charge of driving without due care and attention on the date concerned.

Magistrates banned him from the road for 16 months plus handed him a two months curfew order, meaning he must remain at his address between 8pm and 7am each night for the duration of the order.

He must pay £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by four months if a course is satisfactorily completed.

Found in public carrying offensive weapons 

Colin White had a baton and knife in a public place, Tameside magistrates heard.

The 36-year-old was carrying the items, both offensive weapons, on October 25 last year along Hope Street in Ashton.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and was given a four months jail term, suspended for two year. Magistrates also ordered him to carry out 80 hours unpaid work, plus pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £128.

His address was given as Marlborough Street, Ashton.

Abusive behaviour 

Being threatening and abusive landed Michael Jones a suspended jail term.

The 54-year-old, of Mary Street, Dukinfield, admitted two charges of abusive behaviour when he appeared before Tameside magistrates.

The court found the offences, relating to an incident on September 14 last year, were racially motivated.

Magistrates handed him a 20 weeks jail term, suspended for 12 months, stating his record for previous similar offences had played a part in the sentencing.

He was handed a 12 weeks curfew, meaning he must remain at his address between the hours of 7pm and 7am each night for the duration of the order. He was also instructed to pay £100 compensation.

Threat of jail 

Mark Wood has been given a suspended jail term by Tameside magistrates for damaging a car in Droylsden in October 2019.

The 42-year-old of no fixed abode, denied the offence, but was found guilty of the charge.

At Tameside Magistrates’ Court he was given a 21 days jail term, suspended for 12 months.

He was also issued with a restraining order and instructed to pay £275 compensation.

Restraining order

Bernadette McCormack, 34, of Cheshire Square, Carrbrook, has been given a restraining order by Tameside magistrates.

The 34-year-old admitted a charge of assaulting an individual on May 18 last year.

She was ordered to pay £20 compensation, plus was fined £40 and must pay a victim surcharge of £34.

Prison threat for assault on officer

Andrew McGowan has been given a 12 weeks jail sentence suspended for 12 months by Tameside magistrates for assaulting a police officer.

The 40-year-old, of Carter Place, Hyde, pleaded guilty to the charge which had happened on July 23 last year.

The court heard the incident had happened while the individual was intoxicated.

Magistrates ordered him to pay £100 compensation, plus pay court costs of £100 and a victim surcharge of £128.

Orders at the double for causing harassment

Tameside magistrates have handed Jason Metcalf a curfew and restraining orders for charges of harassment.

The 30-year-old, of Bryce Street, Hyde, initially denied two charges of the harassment of an individual between June and July and in September last year.

He was given an eight weeks curfew order, meaning he must remain at his address between the hours of 5pm and 5am each night. He was also given a restraining order, banning him from having any contact with an individual.

He must also pay court costs of £105 and a victim surcharge of £95.

Banned from driving 

Gary McGann admitted a charge of drug driving when he appeared before Tameside magistrates and was banned from the road for a year.

The court heard the 52-year-old, of Park Street, Ashton, had been stopped on September 30 last year on Stockport Road in Hattersley and found to be over the legal limit.

He was banned from the road for a year, fined £120 plus ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

Champagne on ice

Shuhel Miah, 37, of Crown Street, Denton, has been given a six months conditional discharge by Tameside magistrates for stealing a bottle of champagne worth £30.

He admitted the offence on November 15 last year in Handforth and was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and pay a victim surcharge of £22.

Over drug drive limit 

A motorist from Stalybridge was found to be over the drug drive limit when stopped in Dukinfield on May 29 last year, Tameside magistrates were told.

Gary Birchall, 55, of Booth Close, initially denied the charge but later changed his plea to guilty. Magistrates banned him from the road for 18 months, plus fined him £162.

He was ordered to pay £250 court costs plus pay a victim surcharge of £34.

Magistrates instruct offender to stay at home

Dukinfield driver Jordan Howson has been disqualified from driving for 18 months by Tameside magistrates.

The 25-year-old, of Armadale Road, admitted a charge of failing to provide a specimen of breath when required to do so.

The incident had happened on December 18 last year in Ashton.

Magistrates handed him an eight weeks curfew, meaning he must remain at his address between the hours of 7pm and 7am each night for the duration of the order.

He must also pay £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.
