Rotary Zoom in to provide 30 robotic cat pets for care homes

Members of the Tameside Rotary team busy fundraising online.

A dedicated Tameside Rotary 'Cat' Team used Zoom meetings during the latest lockdown to plan and carry out online fundraising.

Their activities have resulted in 30 robotic cat companions being ‘whiskered’ away to 30 Tameside Care Homes specialising in dementia care in under 30 weeks!

“This lockdown project has been ‘pawsome’ thanks to those individuals and local companies who provided sponsorship and gave donations in response to our JustGiving appeal,” said Andy Williams, Tameside Rotary treasurer.

Designed to respond to motion, touch and sound, the interactive robotic cat companions offer an alternative to traditional pet therapy and can play a key role in helping to reduce stress and anxiety for people living with dementia.

The Tameside Rotary project has been so successful that four other Rotary Clubs within the North West Rotary region have expressed interest in adopting a robotic pets project in their area including the Isle of Man (the hunt is already underway for robot cats with Manx tails!).

Whilst lockdown restrictions may be easing, Tameside Rotary’s endeavours to support those in need continue at pace and the robotic cat companions appeal for Tameside Care Homes remains ongoing.
