Robber who stole from elderly woman in Ashton to appear in court

A robber will appear in court next month after leaving a vulnerable elderly woman injured and shaken when robbing her in Ashton town centre in broad daylight.

The woman was using the cash machine outside the NatWest bank on Warrington Street last Thursday (22 October) when Michal Gibaszek approached her from behind, grabbed her by the neck and ripped the money she'd just deposited from her hand before running off.

After obtaining CCTV footage during their investigations, Tameside's volume crime team managed to locate and arrest Gibaszek, 41, of no fixed abode, through "some good old fashioned police work".

He was charged and remanded at court for trial in November, the Facebook post on GMP Tameside North and East added.

PC Rick Beswick, from GMP's Volume Crime Team on the Tameside division, said it was "a great result" that Gibaszek is now off the streets and thanked members of the public for helping the elderly woman before police arrived.

He said: "This robbery occurred in the middle of the day in a busy town centre, Gibaszek targeted a vulnerable female who must have been terrified by his actions. He stole money to fund his lifestyle, leaving the victim injured and shaken.

"It is a great result for her that he has been remanded and is off the streets. I would like to pass on my thanks to the members of the public who supported the victim after the offence whilst waiting for police to attend."
