Ram-raid at Ashton supermarket

Tesco Express on Oldham Road in Ashton-under-Lyne was ram-raided last night (21 September).

The burglary, in which a heavy vehicle is driven into the windows or doors of a building, happened after the store had closed.

Ashton Waterloo councillor Vimal Choksi MBE released a statement reading: “I am working with the council officers and the Tesco store to remove temporary barriers and install a permanent metal barrier that was in place before Covid.

“Tesco is undertaking all necessary repair work that is required in order to safely open the store to serve our local community.”

There were no injuries as a result of the raid.

A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Police added: "Police were called at 2am to a report of thieves at a store on Oldham Road, Ashton.

"Officers attended and no offenders were inside the property. Initial enquiries suggest two vehicles were used in the incident and an investigation is ongoing.

"No arrests have been made and anyone with information should contact police online, if able, or via 101 quoting incident 236 of 22/09/2021.

"Details can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
