Photo society celebrates first print competition in two years

Ashton Photographic Society has celebrated its first 'print' competition together for almost two years following the pandemic.

The club's faithful membership of around 20 has ensured the group has kept going throughout the tough times.

Club secretary Peter Whalley explained that they were still able to hold their meetings and even photographic competitions via Zoom.

However, the January competition was the first where club members were all back together with highly respected photographer George Steel from Bury Photographic attending to pass judgement on club members’ efforts.

Peter revealed that the club’s annual exhibition was all set to take place in April 2020 and despite lots of hard work at the time it had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. It is hoped the annual exhibition will be able to make its return this year too.

The group meet at St John’s Church, Hurst, and have been able to get back together again to hold their meetings there since last September.

“We had to complete a risk assessment to meet in the church building to abide by all the Covid rules, but it was good to be back again,” said Peter.

The society holds monthly competitions, but January’s was the first where a judge could attend and provide personal face-to-face feedback for all of the photographic members’ entries.

“We are a small club with some 20 members but still growing and we have had a surge in membership since meeting again, with five new members joining,” said Peter.

He said it is not everyone who always wants to join a club but the monthly competitions are the way to learn, gathering constructive feedback from judges who themselves are highly seasoned photographers.

The club holds ten competitions a year. For the first members could enter four images on any topic, plus a further two based on the theme of ‘Winter’.

“We would like to offer George a massive vote of thanks for coming along,” added Peter.

The society now has a busy schedule of events planned for the year ahead, with a wide range of talks, exhibitions and trips and is also starting up a special interest photographic film group.

New members are always welcome to join and to find out more you can visit the society’s website https://www.ashtonphotoclub.com/
