Nostalgia: Large gathering await update on Hyde College plans

Back in 1964, a start was expected soon on Hyde College's new site at Bowlacre in Gee Cross.

Alderman Harold Hibbert, chairman of the further education committee revealed the eagerly awaited news at the annual speech day.

The final hurdle in the planning process had been crossed and the architects could now go ahead with the final design and layout.

The largest ever audience of students, parents, friends and representatives of local industry and commerce were there for the big announcement at Hyde Town Hall.

College principal Mr W Atkinson said a shortage of accommodation had been a huge stumbling block.

“There are many aspects of the corporate life of the college which cannot be developed... however, as the new college is included in the 1964-65 building programme it should be possible in my next report to advise you of the progress made.”

Presenting the prizes and certificates was Prof RW Revans of Manchester College of Science and Technology.

In his address he spoke about the huge growth in automation particularly the use of computers which would transform the workplace in the years ahead.

He said higher standards of accuracy would be required.
