New surveys launched in bid to help improve local rail connections

Denton and Reddish South could be closer to getting regular rail services as Transport for Greater Manchester has launched two new surveys.

The region's transport body has opened a survey to help build the case for more frequent services between Stockport and either Manchester Victoria or Stalybridge via Denton and Reddish South.

Residents in Tameside, as well as in Stockport, are being invited to share their travel behaviour between Ashton, Stockport and Stalybridge, along with any problems related to travel along the route.

Responses from the survey will be used to inform a Strategic Outline Business Case for the new service after TfGM successfully applied for the Government’s Restoring Your Railway Ideas Fund last October - a scheme that will see Westminster fund 75 per cent of costs up to £50,000.

Another survey is also being held to consider a new rail service between Rose Hill Marple and Stockport, calling at Romiley, Bredbury, Brinnington and Reddish South.

Denton and Reddish MP Andrew Gwynne said: “This scheme would massively improve transport connectivity for people right across Denton and Reddish.

“I’m therefore really grateful to TfGM for running these two surveys, and using the views of residents to inform the Strategic Outline Business Case for this scheme.

“I would encourage people across Denton and Reddish to complete these surveys, and have your say on the development of this new line.”

The current Stockport to Stalybridge line sees just two services per week, and has made headlines after being dubbed the “Ghost Train” or “Parliamentary Train” as closing the line would force Northern Rail to pursue a costly parliamentary procedure.

The Stockport or Manchester Victoria to Stalybridge survey can be found here, while the Rose Hill to Stockport survey can be found here.

The questionnaires remain open until Friday 24 June.
