Mossley great grandma's charity chicks

CHARITY KNITS: Barbara with her chicks.

A caring great grandmother from Mossley is going the egg-stra mile to raise funds for a children's hospice.

Barbara Anderton, 83, has been busy knitting Easter chicks to raise money for Francis House Children’s Hospice for more than five years.

Helpers make the chicks every year to boost the charity’s funds.

She said: “I knit them for Francis House Children’s Hospice and send them with a donation towards buying the Cadbury’s creme eggs which they stuff them with and then they sell them for their funds.

“I had a lovely thank you email when my latest 30 arrived safely and to date they have received more than 4,865 which a team of helpers are busy stuffing with eggs!

“I’ve been knitting them for over five years but don’t know how much they have raised over the years.”

During lockdown, busy Barbara crocheted colourful rainbows to raise money for Mossley Food Bank.

The rainbows were displayed in people’s homes.

After raising a magnificent £1,000 for the food bank, Barbara then began crocheting the rainbows for St George’s Church in the town.

Barbara said at the time: “I just want to thank everyone who supported my effort. It’s been fun making the rainbows and I know they have given pleasure to a lot of people.”
