A retired radiologist is putting his best foot forward - 11,000 times every day throughout March.
Dr Ian Brett’s ‘March the Month’ challenge is linked to Prostate Cancer UK and aimed at raising funds for further research into the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.
Dr Brett, who lives in Diggle, said: “As a retired consultant involved in Clinical Radiology I appreciate the value of clinical research to improve diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.
“There have been significant advances in minimal invasive procedures and oncology (radiotherapy and medicines) resulting in improved outcomes and quality of life.
“March the Month and Movember have become a major source of funds as well as bringing increased awareness of the cancer,” he explained. “It’s killing dads, partners, sons, brothers, grandads, uncles and mates. I’m raising money to help fund lifesaving research for men and their families affected by prostate cancer.”
He added: “I was Lead Cancer Clinician at my hospital for years with specific interests in the diagnostic imaging of colorectal and genito urinary malignancies. I was part of a team that met every week to discuss management of cancers, including prostate cancer. There have been advances in the diagnosis and treatment of these cancers, but more research and patient support is needed.
“Prostate cancer is one of the most diagnosed malignancies. Awareness and early diagnosis is important and is key to improving quality of life and survival. I hope to spread awareness throughout Oldham, Saddleworth and Tameside. My aim is to walk a different route close to home (Covid restrictions). I am doing this with the support of and on behalf of Saddleworth Rotary.”
