Magnificent Hyde Mela 2022 draws the crowds

Large crowds descended for only the second ever Hyde Mela at Hyde Park last Sunday (28 August).

Families were out in force as the free to attend event brought together the town’s diverse community for a day filled with fun and entertainment.

Crowds were able to enjoy local bands, singers and dancers performing on the park’s historic bandstand, a range of speakers including Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds, plus a variety of artisan and food stalls and activities including fairground rides and a bouncy castle.

This year saw the addition of a vintage car show, a remote controlled military vehicle and war games display, plus a Hyde United v Stockport County penalty shoot-out competition.

While the warm sunny weather undoubtedly helped and Tameside Radio reported from the proceedings.

The event was held for the first time last year and was the idea of three  important members of the local Bangladeshi community - Mohammed Khan, Mizanur Rahman Mizan and Mohammed Mohi Uddin Saleem, who wanted to stage an event that the whole community could enjoy together, helping to promote community cohesion and understanding.

After its initial success, the Mela returned, organised wholly by a group of volunteers.

The event also played host to the relaunched Martyn Hett Memorial Trophy, with Paul Hett presenting trophies to three deserving award-winners nominated by the public.

Two awards went to Laura-Jayne Street from Freedom Dancers and the Local Runners Podcast team.

The main award and getting his name on the  trophy for 2022 was Gareth Jones, who is a Ranger for Nature’s Beanz Adventures, who do exciting adventures for young children, learning about science and nature.

Father and son Paul and Dan Hett also presented a cheque to Kidscan for £1,660 at the event, raising the money through a 22 mile sponsored cycle challenge in memory of those who lost their lives - including Martyn Hett - in the Arena bombing in 2017. Martyn had undertaken work for the children cancer charity Kidscan.
