Intriguing new book by local author is now on sale

An intriguing new book written by a local author is now on sale at Tameside's Local Studies and Archives Centre in Ashton.

'The True Story of Mother Clare on Trial' is by Mary Whitehead M.A.

Mother Clare arrived in Ashton-under-Lyne in 1904 and with the sanction of the Bishop of Salford opened her Convent in Welbeck Street on Ashton.

The Bishop then asked her to open a Convent in Nelson under the auspices of Father Smith of that Parish.

Suddenly, and without notice, Mother Clare found herself having to answer all sorts of questions concerning her Ashton Convent. Later she was asked questions concerning the Nelson Convent.

Following their investigations the Bishop of Salford, together with his entourage, took the Report to the Papal Court at Rome. Mother Clare set about writing her own letter to the Papal Court asking what she was being accused of, she was concerned it might have been something to do with a certain Priest she had had to admonish.

But what happened next?

It's a true story which has been thoroughly researched and copies of the book are on sale for £5 at Tameside Local Studies & Archives, Cotton St, Ashton, OL6 7BY.
