Hyde Mela is all set for a colourful and musical return

Last year saw the first ever Mela in Hyde Park, which brought together the town's diverse community for a day filled with fun and entertainment.

The free-to-attend attraction was visited by some 3,000 people who enjoyed local bands, singer and dancers performing on the park’s historic bandstand.

The event was the idea of three local residents, important members of the local Bangladeshi community. Mohammed Khan, Mizanur Rahman Mizan and Mohammed Mohi Uddin Saleem, wanted an event that the whole community could enjoy together, in order to promote community cohesion and understanding.

The Mela, which was organised wholly by a group of volunteers, including some local councillors, has no council or other funding, so was designed to be self financing, whilst keeping it free for people to attend.

Despite only having three months to organise the event, with uncertainty over Covid restrictions, things were judged to be a huge success, by those who attended and those organising.

The idea, if the inaugural event went well, was to build year on year, especially if the Covid situation improved.

With that being the case this year’s event is all set to take place on Sunday from 11am. The Deputy Mayor of Tameside Cllr Tafheen Sharif will have the honour of declaring the event officially open at 12.30pm.

Once again, the park will resound to entertainment by local bands and singers, with a larger area of the park being filled with artisan and food stalls.

Fairground rides and a bouncy castle will once again be available for children to enjoy. This year sees the addition of a vintage car show, a remote controlled military vehicle and war games display, plus a Hyde United vs Stockport County penalty shoot-out competition.

Entry will be free once again, with additional security patrolling the site and extra toilet facilities.

Some funding was secured from Action Together’s Community Fund, with money also coming from a raffle, with prizes donated by more than 20 local businesses. The event will also play host to the relaunched Martyn Hett Memorial Trophy, with Paul Hett presenting trophies to three deserving award winners nominated by the public.

Tameside Radio 103.6FM will also present to report from the proceedings on the day.
