Great Academy Ashton programme to help primary pupils

READY TO EXCEL: Amelia and Jasmina Shahin, David Waugh (principal) and Alfie Buckley.

Great Academy Ashton has launched a new programme for primary school pupils who have a keen interest in English, science and maths.

Pupils who enjoy academic study and have a keen interest in these subjects have been nominated by their primary school headteachers to join the new programme called Excel Academy.

This specialist stream will allow them to benefit from a more in-depth and fast-paced curriculum over 13 weeks, and to enjoy a range of extra-curricular opportunities to support their interests.

Alongside the academy’s existing  academic curriculum, the Excel Academy will involve a specially developed timetable to target subjects that will support students with high-level tuition and subsequently help their transition to learn at secondary school.

This will include additional modules on life sciences, unlocking a child’s maths confidence, and boosting their English skills from writing and communicating.

David Waugh, principal at Great Academy Ashton, said: “We are excited to be launching our new Excel Academy, which will offer specialist provision for young people in Ashton, with a particular interest in and aptitude for science, English, and maths.

“The Excel Academy will sit alongside our already robust curriculum and extracurricular offer. It will provide a greater depth and focus for those who are keen to prepare for life at secondary school.

“Speaking to local families, we are confident that this programme will meet the ambitions and interests of a growing number of parents and young people who want to capitalise on these opportunities and prepare for Year 7.”

Pupils will attend the academy every Tuesday evening from 3.30pm till 5pm for lectures and workshops, with graduation planned on completion of the programme.
