Fond farewell for Hattersley vicar

Reverend Denise Hayes pictured with the local councillors.

The Reverend Denise Hayes has moved on as vicar of St Barnabas Church in Hattersley.

Having spent two-and-a-half years ministering to her congregation and supporting the wider community, Denise has moved to a new role as a chaplain at HMP Doncaster.

Her final service was attended by the Civic Mayor of Tameside Cllr Janet Cooper, along with her consort Dennis Fitzpatrick, and ward colleagues Councillors Jacqueline Owen and Jacqueline North.

Representatives of the food bank and local schools also attended, to wish the Rev Hayes well with her new venture.

It was emotional for all present, as the Rev Hayes spoke about the valuable work being undertaken, by volunteers and others, to create a thriving and supportive environment.

The Rev Hayes, working closely with local community groups and schools, was an integral part of the Longdendale Mutual Aid Group - set up during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

The group provided a telephone helpline, food and medicine deliveries, activities and much more.

This group has now developed into the continued group 'Community Matters' who will carry on supporting the community of Hattersley.
