Family of great grandfather who died in Hattersley issue plea

The family of a 'very loving' great grandfather who died after being hit by a van in Hattersley have re-issued a plea for information as the two-month anniversary of his death approaches.

Barry Hampson suffered serious head injuries when he was struck by an orange Ford Transit van.

It happened at the entrance to the car park of The Harehill Tavern pub on Underwood Road, at around 10.20pm on Friday 16 October.

The 77-year-old was taken to hospital but, despite the best efforts of medical staff, sadly passed away the following day.

Barry's family paid a moving tribute to a "very loving" great grandfather who loved spending time with his great grandchildren and his best friend Jimmy, and "always had a story to tell".

Bunches of flowers and a number of messages (pictured below) were left at the car park entrance in tribute to Barry.

Police issued an appeal for witnesses at the time and Barry's family are now repeating the message, urging anyone who could help with enquiries to come forward.

Barry's niece Julie Jones said: “I am appealing once again to anyone who may have seen the incident with my uncle outside the Harehill Tavern in Hattersley on the car park entrance, where Barry was hit by a van.

"We are still trying to put pieces together as to what happened on this sad night and as a family we are still trying to come to terms with this tragic event, which cost Barry his life and us a very important and well-loved loved family member.

"So we are asking for anybody that may have seen or heard anything to contact the police with any information. We would be truly thankful."

Following the collision, a 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing death by driving without due care and attention.

He was subsequently released under investigation, pending further enquiries.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call 0161 856 4741, quoting incident number 3174 of 16/10/20.
