Family's tribute to 'very loving' great grandfather

The family of an elderly man who died after being hit by a van in Hattersley have paid a moving tribute to a "very loving" great grandfather who "always had a story to tell".

Barry Hampson suffered serious head injuries when he was struck by an orange Ford Transit van.

It happened at the entrance to the car park of The Harehill Tavern pub on Underwood Road, at around 10.20pm last Friday evening (16 October).

The 77-year-old was taken to hospital but, despite the best efforts of medical staff, sadly passed away the following day.

Bunches of flowers and messages (pictured below) have been left at the car park entrance in tribute to Barry.

In a touching statement issued by police, Barry's family said he loved spending time with his great grandchildren and his best friend Jimmy, but said he was "lost" without his wife Silvia who had passed away almost two years ago.

They said: "Barry was 77 years old and always had a story to tell. He loved to travel when he was younger.

"Barry and his late wife Silvia went everywhere. When Silvia passed away almost two years ago, Barry just didn't know what to do; he was lost without her.

"He has always been a big part of our family and loved being around the great grandchildren."

The tribute continues: "He loved spending time with them; they hung on his every word.

"He loved going to the pub and spending time with his best friend, Jimmy.

"Barry was a very independent and outspoken person; he liked to have the last word. He didn't like being wrong but if he was he would hold his hands up and bow his head.

"Barry was such a character and very loving. He will be missed by all his friends and family."
