Dukinfield councillors have speeders in their sights

TAKING AIM: Councillors Naila Sharif, John Taylor and Jackie Lane target the speeders in Dukinfield.

Dukinfield councillors are back on patrol as they take aim to improve safety on the town's roads.

With speeding motorists a real problem in some areas of Dukinfield, the three borough councillors are out and about targeting traffic hot spots.

Cllr John Taylor explained that the three local Tameside councillors had started monitoring traffic speeds before the pandemic.

However, Covid-19 put the brakes on their work. But they are now back in the driving seat.

Cllr Taylor said: "Myself and fellow Dukinfield councillors Jackie Lane and Naila Sharif will be out again on Sunday at the various problem spots around Dukinfield.

"We had the speed gun before Covid struck but are now using it again three to four times a week."

The speed gun is used only to gather data and gauge traffic speeds with this information then passed onto and shared with the police to highlight areas they might target.

"We know speeding is a problem in Dukinfield," added Cllr Taylor. "Ideally, we want community speed checks alongside the police."

He said motorists often slowed down when they saw the speed gun being pointed their way - especially if the councillors were donned in high-viz jackets.

"They certainly slow down and a few might even give us a wave as they go by, acknowledging that they know they have broken the speed limit," added Cllr Taylor.

The team were last out along Park Road in Dukinfield earlier in the week, a 30mph stretch, but where many motorists were recorded travelling at 40mph. The worst offender was clocked travelling at 48mph.
