A ‘Parisian-style’ zebra crossing that was trialed in Denton earlier in the year could be set to appear across the country after a successful trial.

A temporary implied crossing appeared on Peel Street, close to Denton Post Office, earlier this year as part of a government study into whether simple road markings, which aren’t currently legal in this country but are common on the continent, help to prioritise pedestrians over cars.

The results were announced on Friday (30 July) and they include changes to the highway code. One of the major changes mean that those in charge of cars will have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger they pose to other road users.

The gov.uk report says: “ strengthened pedestrian priority on pavements and when crossing or waiting to cross the road.”

It means that implied crossings such act hose trialed in Denton will be legal and will give pedestrians priority.
